Terminator Face- test 1

Hey everyone, Sorry for the long gap between posts.

So here is the first stage of my Terminator project. I had a go at only using basic materials, which didn't work out fabulously but would be good enough for a halloween costume. So here goes:

Products used:

  • Liquid Latex
  • Toilet Paper
  • Grease Paint (Ben Nye- Master Bruise Wheel, Kryolan- Burns and Injury Wheel)
  • Foundation and Powder
  • Talc Powder
  • Mehron Synwax
  • Mehron Silver Metallic Powder and Mixing Liquid
  • Sponges
  • Pipette
  • Brushes
  • Lolly stick
  • Fake Blood
  • Cocktail Stick
Step 1:

Using a small sponge I applied a thin layer of liquid latex to my cheek then layered a piece of toilet paper and repeated this process about 5 times. I waited for the latex to dry then dusted it with talc to stop the latex from sticking to itself.

Step 2:

I applied a coat of foundation to the area to blend it in with the skin. Which didn't exactly work that well to be honest.

Step 3:

Next I stippled on some colour using the Ben nye master bruise wheel. It worked well on the skin but not so much on the latex.

Step 4:

I picked at the latex using a toothpick, you don't want to use anything sharp in case you cut through and  get your skin. I plucked a hole and tried to tear the edges to look like torn skin.
Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture before I used the Silver Mehron metallic powder to colour the inside off the hole.
I mixed the powder with Mehron mixing liquid. It's actually pretty cool when it mixes together looks a bit like meting solder.

Step 6:

I used a small brush to put a little bit of black grease paint around the inside edges of the wound. This adds a little bit of depth.

Step 7:
Next I added red grease paint inside the wound. This looked absolutely terrible.
I decided to wash it off. I widened the hole to try and lessen the appearance of the latex.

Step 8:

I took a small piece of synwax and rolled it between my fingers to soften it. I flattened it into a line and applied it approximately where the top jaw bone is. I used the lolly stick to smooth out the edges and blend it in. I sealed it with a thin coat of liquid latex.

Step 9:

The latex had started to peel of a bit by this point. Like I said at the beginning this wasn't a very professional job. Only lasted a couple of hours.

I used the Mehron Silver powder again to cover the area.

 Step 10:

I used a thick white grease paint to highlight the raised area, and a little bit of black to lowlight the underside.
Step 11:

Lastly I added a really cheap fake blood around the edges.
I know it looks rather dodgy but really I just wanted to play around with the Mehron powder.

Any comments and suggestions?

The Faces of Mr Head

Say hello to Mr Head.

This was an awesome find for me. My sister had this thing in her bedroom for years until I dug it out.

It is a CSI facial reconstruction kit. From the TV show, I'm not sure if they make them anymore but I've seen a few on ebay.

It comes with two large blocks of plasteline which is basically an oil based clay so it doesn't dry out or harden. This means you can remould it as many times as you like and leave it out in the air without any bad effects.

It also comes with instructions on how to apply the plasteline to the head in the best way to make a realistic face.

I'm in the process of making a video that shows how I did it so it should be up within a week or two.

Number 1

This unfortunately is my first creation. Unfortunate because I was trying to make it look like a real face.

Check out the major cheek bones and sunken eyes, rather skelator like I think.

Also he needs major lip surgery.

Number 2

After Number 1 I decided to go for a less realistic approach.

This one is based on some masks I saw whilst in Venice, they are all highly decorated with feathers and glitter. I'll make a post later showing how I made some of my own.

I really enjoyed creating the bold features on number two. Most of my artwork (drawings mainly) have been more caricature than realistic so I don't know why I went for real first.

I much prefer Number 2.

Number 3

This was my attempt at a vampire forehead, so ignore the terrible lips and the cheeks.

I mainly just built up the brow and added a crease in the centre.

Number 4

Number 4 is my second attempt at realism.

I think I got a much better  shape on the lips this time around, but the eye  brows were way too high.

Number 5

This is number 4 improved I have lowered the brow, defined the cheek bones and added those little raises above the lips.

Sorry about the bad lighting.

I'd love to hear any comments on the faces or ideas for new ones.

The Simple Scratch

Thought I'd upload a few pics of some of my previous projects and good and not so good.

The Simple Scratch

For this I used general face paint (grease paint)

To be honest I don't think this worked out that great. I didn't really have the right colours so I think it looks a bit too bright.

I applied the grease paint using a cocktail stick.

First I used a generic red for thew redness that is caused when you get a scratch.  After applying with a cocktail stick I smudged it in slightly with my finger.

Down the centre I used a black grease paint. Only a tiny bit, but just enough to darken and add depth.

I will be redoing this when my new colour wheels arrive so hopefully I can get a bit more of a realistic look.

I will be posting a video of the new scratch in a few weeks.

The Mangled Hand

Thought I'd upload a few pics of some of my previous projects and good and not so good.

The Mangled Hand

One of my first attempts with liquid latex. For other products used check out the Slashed Wrist tutorial.

Personally I think that the wound itself looks quite good, although I do think that I used too much latex causing the area around the wound not to blend with the skin very well.

Like in the slashed wrist tutorial I made my own fake blood which unfortunately for this project did not work out so well. I used red food colouring to colour the blood, which spread a bit too much and coloured the entire hand. a weird pink colour.

Mehron Metallic Powder Silver #129

Has anyone tried this product?? Mehron metallic powder Silver #129 .

I was wondrong if it will work for my Terminator project for the revealed metal look.

Any suggestions??

Terminator Challenge

Hi,
So I have decided to set my self a challenge ....

I realise it is going to take a while, but I think it is going to be fun and quite informative.
If you look closely it is going to require burns, cuts, ash, and the obvious revealed metal under the skin. I am going to do it step by step, starting with the little stuff like making the ashy look in the skin and finishing with the revealed metal.

I think I will attempt to make a prosthetic appliance for the metal side of the face as it is such a large area.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions for how to create the metal look I am all ears.

Again this is going to take a while but I hope that you stick with me throughout the process and offer any ideas and suggestions for better effects.

I will also be making videos of every step which will be available here and on youtube.

Thanks

Slashed Wrist Tutorial- liquid Latex

Products used:

  • Liquid Latex
  • Tissue Paper/Toilet Roll 1 ply
  • Foundation to match skin tone
  • Tooth picks
  • Acrylic Paint (Probably best to use latex pigment or paint, I just used what I had)
  • Grease Paint / Face paint
  • Moisturiser mixed with red food colouring (Fake blood if you have it, although the moisturiser did create some great fatty lumps.
  • Sponge that you don't mind destroying( I suggest a cheap bath sponge cut into smaller pieces, this keeps costs down)

Step 1

First apply a layer of liquid latex to the wrist. It's up to you how big or small you want the wound, mine is quite large. Then carefully apply a piece of tissue paper to the latex. Make sure the edges of the paper are torn as this will blend better than straight edges.

Repeat this until you have 5-7 layers. Try to avoid making all of the pieces the same size. This will make it look like something stuck onto your arm. Try to leave the outer edges thinner and the centre thicker.

For the last few layers of latex I added a small amount of red and yellow acrylic paint to achieve a flesh tone. The colour didn't work out great with the acrylics so it's up to you whether to do that or not. Although it did create a nice dark ring around the wound.

Wait for latex to dry - 5 mins at the most

Step 2

For this part I used a tooth pick but you can use tweezers. Now pick at the part of the latex where you want the wound to be. Generally this is the centre of the latex area.

This should not be neat! Pick and pull as much or little as you want, trying to create torn edges.

Step 3

Next I used Grease Paint (generic face paint) to colour the inside of the wound. First I used a red to colour the exposed skin.

Then I used black around the edges under the latex to add depth to the wound. I also used some yellow to create a fatty tissue look.

I also applied foundation matching my skin tone to lighten the colour of the latex. Remember that any paint or foundation used with show up darker on the latex than on your skin.

Step 4

Next I used a browny/dark red Grease paint inside and around the open area. This adds more depth and a fresher look to the wound.

Step 5

Using a sponge I dabbed a browny grease paint around the wound, then did the same with the yellow grease paint. Try to stipple the paint onto the arm this creates a more realistic effect than rubbing or brushing.

Then I did the same with the foundation to tone down the colours slightly.

Step 6

I made a mixture of red food colouring and a thick moisturiser to create a fake blood. You can just use fake blood if you have it, but the moisturiser did create a good fatty look.

In this picture i have also added a but more yellow grease paint to the edges of the wound.

Just a quick warning. Food colouring stains the skin. Takes a while to get off so don't use on the face if you have to go out later!

Thanks for reading guys!

Any comments, suggestions or requests will be appreciated.
